    Abstract
    The editorial cartoon is a special term for the image column in the print media, like newspapers or magazines, contains commentary on current events. It then becomes confirmation for editorial cartoons as a means to comment on the news or issues in a social situation. In this study, a single column or a single panel editorial cartoon on the SKH Kedaulatan Rakyat deliberately chosen to represent the eruption of Mount Merapi. However as an editorial in the form of visual, the actual problems and criticism in the editorial cartoon is not explicitly described. Based on that thought, then this study entitled ‘Editorial Cartoons as Social Critique Media’ with a focus on the eruption of Mount Merapi situation. Formulation of the problem in this study is how the social reality and disclosure criticism in thematic editorial cartoons eruption of Mount Merapi in the rubric Guyon Maton? Under these conditions, the purpose of this research was to answer that problems, with the two order of significations semiotic analysis from Barthes's. There are several finding in this research. First, there is a tendency of the use ethics and morality in a criticism to avoid conflict. Second, the editorial cartoons are always trying to connotes an actual topic with ethical value system. Third, criticism in editorial cartoons seem more neutral to all parties, be it government, victims of disasters or even the readers.
