Suro (Javanese) or Muḥarram (Arabic) month is one of the months sacred by several groups, especially Javanese. There some famous myths in this month in certain circles such as the prohibition of moving to new houses, traveling far away, and also holding a marriage contract. Among the Javanese, carrying out a wedding in Muḥarram is very much avoided. The researcher proved this fact when looking at the data in Religious Affairs Office (Kantor Urusan Agama/KUA) of Cangkringan, one of the KUA in Sleman district, where the majority of the population still adhere to ancestral teachings. This study will focus on two things: the background of the prohibition on marriage in the month of Muḥarram in the Cangkringan Sub-district community and the view of Islamic Law regarding marriage which was carried out in Muharram. To explore the problems above, the resarcher used documentation and interviews as data collection techniques. Documentation was taken from primary and secondary sources while the interviews were conducted with KUA employees and community figures from Cangkringan. Afterwards, researcher used inductive analysis to collect interconnected data and then drew general conclusions from those data. The results of this study indicate that Javanese people, especially in Cangkringan, still strongly believe in the prohibition on marriage held in month of Muḥarram. This belief is still held firmly for three main factors: historical errors, the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, and glorifying Muḥarram as one of holy months in Islam. In Islam itself, basically, all months and days are good for marriage. There is no special prohibition on getting married in Muḥarram. However, departing from the rule " العادة محكمة ", there is justification that can be made to respect the tradition of the community in avoiding marriage in Muharram. As there is no prohibition on marriage in the month of Muharram, there is also no prohibition against marrying in Muḥarram. Furthermore, some of the reasons that researchers got can be legitimized in an Islamic way such as efforts to focus on worship in the month of Muḥarram and leave behind worldly things including marriages that are vulnerable to lust.en_US
