    Abstract
    This research is about the use of short story as materials in reading comprehension in Junior High School grade IX. This research is aimed to investigate how the short story are used to materials in reading comprehension, and to find out the students’ opinion on the use of short story as materials in reading comprehension to help them in writing narrative text. The participants of this research are 28 students (male: 16, and female: 12) in MTs YAPI Pakem grade IX class C. This research is designed as a descriptive qualitative research in which data were taken from observations, interviews, and documentation. Findings of this research show that short story as an alternative teaching materials can be used to develop students’ reading comprehension. The pictures in the short story are engaging and can help students by providing clear storyline as guidance to write story. Meanwhile, short story is appropriate to solve students’ learning problems such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. In addition, the students said that short story are interesting, funny, easy, and not monotonous as well as help them to develop reading comprehension. Furthermore, the students’ opinion that short story is fun materials certainly the learners can learning with comfy and interesting to develop their reading comprehension. Therefore, short story is also regarded as teaching materials that can help build new atmosphere to engage students to learn reading comprehension in the classroom.
