Descriptive Study on Language Learning Strategies Used by the Students in Learning Speaking at Daily Communication Class in English Language Education Department Islamic University of Indonesia 2016/201

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the highest and lowest frequently used of language learning strategies used by students in learning speaking at Daily Communication Class in English Language Education Department Islamic University of Indonesia. The populations of subject research were 80 first-year students at Daily Communication Class in English Language Education Department Islamic University of Indonesia in batch 2016-2017. This survey research adapts Oxford‟s (1990) instrument of Strategy Inventory of Language Learning Strategies (SILL) version 7.0. The instrument contained 38 items which are divided into 6 categories. The data was analyzed by using frequency, and means. The mean score shows that the most frequent strategy used for learning speaking is metacognitive strategy (̅x=3.69) , followed by cognitive strategy (̅x=3.61) . While the least frequently use is affective strategies (̅x=2.97) . The result show that cognitive strategy: “I practise the sounds of English” (̅x=4.03) . Meanwhile, the lowest frequently used is affective strategy: “I write down my feelings in a language learning diary” (̅x=2.21) . Another result also shows that there were differences between males and females student in the use of language learning strategies in learning speaking. Mostly female students have high average in using the strategies than male students. In memory strategy, the average of male students is 3.03 and female students is 3.39. In cognitive strategy, male students got 3.38 and female students got 3.76. Compensation strategy, the average of male students is 3.36 and 3.69 for female students. In metacognitive strategy, the average of male students is 3.39 and female students is 3.88. Affective strategy, the average is 2.80 for male students and 3.08 for female students. Social strategy, the average is 3.05 for male students and 3.44 for female students.
