Abstract
Flexible pavement in coastal areas whichoften receiveseawater flood need special
attention. The pool of sea water can reduce the stickiness of asphalt with aggregates, so that the
aggregates willloose from the road surface and being a hole. Due to the nature of water going to
press in all directions when burdened by traffic loads, it is certain that it started small holes may
be growing, so we need to do research on new alternative flexible pavement applied in vulnerable
areas submerged in sea water inundation. The purpose of this study was to determine the
performance of 12,5 mm Stone Matrix Asphalt mixture by using Pertamina Pen 60/70 and Starbit
E-55 asphalt, when submerged in sea water in 48 hours, 96 hours and 192 hours.
This research starts from physical properties of material tests, determine the optimum
asphalt content value, immersing the specimen into the sea water, do Marshall, Immersion,
Indirect Tensile Strength and permeability tests. The next step is analyze all data. The standards
used inphysical properties of material tests refers to the Bina Marga 2010, and the mixture testing
standards refers to the AASHTO specifications.
The results showed that there was a stability reduction of SMA 12,5 mm mixture along
with the duration of sea water immersion duration up to 192 hours, amounting to 9,75% in the
mixture by using Pertamina Pen 60/70 and 27,15% in the mixture using Starbit E-55. Decrease of
flow value by 16,19% and 19,54% in asphalt mixture of Pertamina Pen 60/70 and Starbit E-55.
The MQ value in the Pertamina Pen 60/70 mixture increased 26,85% after soaking for 96 hours,
then decreased by 15,05% after 192 hours soaked. While in the mixture Starbit E-55 decreased by
13,57%. The value of Index of Retained Strength in both types of mixture when soaked in sea
water at 0 hours and 96 hours <90% so it does not meet the standards specification of Bina
Marga. At 48 hours of immersion duration, both types of mixture meet the standard specification,
which 91,42% on Pen 60/70 mixture and 90,17% on Starbit E-55 mixture. In addition, the Indirect
Tensile Strength test value also decreased by 26,77% in the Starbit E-55 mixture. In contrast, it
occurs on Pertamina Pen 60/70 mixture, which shows stable value until 192 hours of sea water
immersion. In the permeability test results, it is known that the SMA 12,5 mm is a 'bad drainage'
mixture. The more tightly mixed SMA 12.5 mm will be better because it will have a good durability
as well.
