dc.description.abstractA great motivation in learning English as Foreign Language cannot come without a purpose. To make the students like what they are studying in class, ice breaking is considered to be one of the ways to create a great start out of it expecting a conditioned leisure situation. This reasearch describe about the teachers’ and students’ perception of icebreaking types that is used for teaching as motivational techniques in learning English.This study is a single instrumental case study research. The data were collected from interview, document analysis, and observation. The study was conducted in SMAN 1 Pakem grades X class involving five classroom sessions in three science classes and two social classes. The participants of this research were two English teachers and two students, one of the students from science class student and one of the students from social class student in SMAN 1 Pakem as purposive sampling in the classroom observed to get the research data source. Based on research findings,this study revealed that from the teachers and students’ interviews, it can be concluded that ice breaking activities in SMAN 1 Pakem usually use elicitation or questioning and sometimes use realia or authentic material as the media for ice breaking. it is found out that ice breaking may contribute to boost the students’ motivation in learning English. Besides boost the motivation, ice breaking can also boost the performance as well as involvement of the students during a class.en_US
