Teachers’ Motivational Strategies In An English Classroom In An Islamic Junior High School
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to identify English teacher's motivational
strategies in an Islamic junior high school in Madura. A qualitative method with an
interview as the data collecting technique was used to describe motivational
strategies used by the teacher in his English classroom. A teacher whose teaching
experience was more than three years participated in this study. His three years’
experience was expected to reflect his expertise with ample knowledge in teaching.
An audio-recorded interview was used to collect the data, which then transcribed
verbatim using voice typing. A thematic analysis was then applied to analyze the
data based on Dörnyei's theory of motivation (2008). The result of the study showed
that teacher used five of the six Dörnyei's theory of motivation (2008). Teacher is
expected to increase student learning motivation, it is expected that teachers have a
friendly attitude, empathize, adapt and accept all the unique characteristics of
students. The teacher must be good at creating a fun learning atmosphere by
choosing the right learning method along with giving various assignments. In
addition, it is necessary for teachers to provide motivating feedback to students.
