    Abstract
    Building character of Indonesia people is a systemic-collective effort of a country to realize the life of nation and state in accordance with the principles and ideology, constitution, nation direction, and its collective potential in the context of civilized national, regional and global life. In HMI (Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam) or Moslem Student Association is organization placing Islam and Indonesia as synergi to create civilization with an aim to make the cadre system in building cadre of religious community and cadre nation. This is a qualitative research with phenomenological approach. The object of this research was in the cadre system in HMI branch of Yogyakarta. The informant research, BPL, branch of KOHATI, cadre of HMI, and the Chairman of HMI branch of Yogyakarta. The technique in collecting data was by means of triangulation through participative observation, document analysis, and unstructured and structured interview. Result of this research was consisting of two points: 1. HMI has a concept of nation character that deals with the harmony of Islam and Indonesia. The description of nation character in the concept of HMI included: the formation of a society that upholds the spirit of universal brotherhood, egalitarian, democratic, social justice, martyrdom, istiqomah. 2. The implementation of the nation's character building in cadre system of HMI Branch Yogyakarta included: First, Formal cadre system that consists of (LK1) and LK2, in which the formation outline of its character including intellectuals, nationalism insight, embedment of love to nation, embedment of Pancasila values, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (differences in unity), the commitment to NKRI (Sovereign State of Indonesia Republic). Second, Non-Formal Cadre was to develop skills and abilities in certain areas. 3. Thirdly, Informal cadre was something placing the very large portion as more than 95% of the cadre was informal cadre.
