Indonesian Efl Students’ Literacy Practices: A Case Study
Abstract
Despite a large amount of research on literacy in the Indonesian context, little is known
about how foreign language literacy is practiced. This study aims to explore the foreign
language literacy practices of EFL learners both inside and outside the classroom. The
participants were two EFL learners, who were studying in an Indonesian university's English
Education Study program at the time of the study. Qualitative data were collected using a case
study design to provide more rich data, in depth semi structured interviews were conducted
and subsequently analyze using thematic analysis to identify key patterns in their literacy
practices. The study reveals that learners demonstrate a sophisticated ability to navigate their
language use according to context. The critical role of prior knowledge also affects how
learners interact with the communities. Additionally, learners also incorporate their strategies
in mother tongue to foreign language.
