dc.description.abstractBackground: Cigarettes are tobacco products that have the potential to harm individual and public health. Data from 2017 shows that around 8 million people died from smoking-related diseases. Although the number of adult smokers has decreased from 2000 to 2015, smoking is still high in Indonesia. According to a 2021 survey, around 33.5% of the Indonesian population are active smokers, with the highest prevalence of male smokers in the world. Smoking can cause various serious diseases such as cancer, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases because it contains harmful substances. Efforts have been made by several countries to reduce cigarette consumption, including restrictions on smoking areas, health warnings on cigarette packs, and increased excise taxes. Environmental factors and habits, as well as knowledge about the dangers of smoking, influence a person's smoking behavior. Although medical students should have good knowledge about health, some still smoke, so their role in smoking prevention needs to be considered. Research Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence smoking behavior in 2019 students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Indonesia. Results: Students of the Faculty of Medicine of the Islamic University of Indonesia class of 2019 who smoke have a variety of reasons that influence their smoking behavior. Some students dabble in smoking because they are influenced by the social environment around them. Some smoke as a way to reduce stress, avoid weight gain, or are attracted to flavored cigarettes. Although there is an advertising factor that promotes cigarettes, it does not really affect students' smoking behavior. In addition, socio-economic factors also do not fully inhibit smoking behavior in 2019 students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Indonesia. Conclusion: Based on research on students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Indonesia class of 2019, it was found that factors that influence smoking behavior include trial and error and peer influence. Smoking is also used as a way to cope with stress and avoid weight gain. Respondents argued that cigarette advertisements did not have a significant influence. Socioeconomic factors are not fully an obstacle in their smoking activities.en_US
