Faktor-faktor yang Memengaruhi Perilaku Merokok Mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Islam Indonesia Angkatan 2019
Abstract
Background: Cigarettes are tobacco products that have the potential to harm
individual and public health. Data from 2017 shows that around 8 million people
died from smoking-related diseases. Although the number of adult smokers has
decreased from 2000 to 2015, smoking is still high in Indonesia. According to a
2021 survey, around 33.5% of the Indonesian population are active smokers, with
the highest prevalence of male smokers in the world. Smoking can cause various
serious diseases such as cancer, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular
diseases because it contains harmful substances. Efforts have been made by
several countries to reduce cigarette consumption, including restrictions on
smoking areas, health warnings on cigarette packs, and increased excise taxes.
Environmental factors and habits, as well as knowledge about the dangers of
smoking, influence a person's smoking behavior. Although medical students
should have good knowledge about health, some still smoke, so their role in
smoking prevention needs to be considered.
Research Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that
influence smoking behavior in 2019 students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic
University of Indonesia.
Results: Students of the Faculty of Medicine of the Islamic University of Indonesia
class of 2019 who smoke have a variety of reasons that influence their smoking
behavior. Some students dabble in smoking because they are influenced by the
social environment around them. Some smoke as a way to reduce stress, avoid
weight gain, or are attracted to flavored cigarettes. Although there is an advertising
factor that promotes cigarettes, it does not really affect students' smoking behavior.
In addition, socio-economic factors also do not fully inhibit smoking behavior in
2019 students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Indonesia.
Conclusion: Based on research on students of the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic
University of Indonesia class of 2019, it was found that factors that influence
smoking behavior include trial and error and peer influence. Smoking is also used
as a way to cope with stress and avoid weight gain. Respondents argued that
cigarette advertisements did not have a significant influence. Socioeconomic
factors are not fully an obstacle in their smoking activities.
