Abstract

Democracy was the prevailed political system in Indonesia. This system is not a new system just implemented in this country, but its application had been thought long before the independence of Indonesia by the fighters. After independence from colonialism, Indonesia embraces a system of democratic government The existence of a democratic system in Indonesia had become controversial until now. What is the ideal democratic system applied in Indonesia especially in the reform era. The thought of K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid and Prof. Dr. H. Ahmad Syafii Ma'arif became the focus of researchers in his thoughts on Islam and Democracy in Indonesia. so that we can know the basis of the thinking of the two figures and the future of the Indonesian nation from the eyes of these two figures. By using descriptive research, the writer gets some facts from both figures. The author also uses a philosophical normative approach, to find out the problems that exist in normative law in the previous legal treasury and historical approach to look back on the background of the lives of the two figures. In democracy the welfare of society must be in the fore without any exceptions. This is nothing else, in accordance with the teachings of Islam that must protect and spread love on earth to the whole ummah
