Forgiveness in Terms of Emotion Regulation and Empathy
Abstract
Victims of bullying are often the perpetrators of bullying. The victims feel hurt by
what they have experienced and take their revenge on others who are weaker. The behaviour
that can eliminate the feeling of revenge on the victim of bullying is forgiveness. There are
several factors of forgiveness including emotion regulation and empathy. This study aims
to determine the relationship between emotion regulation and empathy with forgiveness in
victims of bullying. The subjects of this study were 233 Yogyakarta students who had been
bullied. The measuring instrument used in this study is the forgiveness measure compiled
by Nashori. Then for measuring emotion regulation using The Heidelberg Form for Emotion
Regulation Strategies (HFERST) compiled by Izadpanah, Barnow, Neubauer, and Holl. The
empathy measuring instrument in this study used the Basic Empathy Scale in Adults (BES-A)
compiled by Carre, Stefaniak, D’ambrosio and Bensalah. In addition, to measure tool for victims
of bullying used the multidimensional peer victimization scale-24 (MPVS-24) compiled by
Joseph and Stockton. The results showed that the F-count value was 43,466 with a significance
value of 0.000 <0.05. Based on this, it shows that there is a simultaneous influence of emotion
regulation and empathy on forgiveness. research shows that there is a relationship between
emotion regulation and empathy with forgiveness in victims bullying.
