Exploring Critical Literacy Practices Of An Indonesian College Student: A Case Study
Abstract
Critical literacy is an ability that helps readers find information and understand
text, by changing the perspective that is usually used, then reading the text from various
points of view, and understanding the text that has been read. This is important to
implement, moreover, there is still a lack of critical literacy research in Indonesia. The
purpose of this study was to determine the critical literacy practices of college students
in Indonesia. Case study is used in this research to explore critical literacy practices of
college student in Indonesian. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews
4 times, the first to third interviews were conducted online while the fourth interview
was conducted offline. In addition, data analysis was carried out by thematic analysis,
which was used to identify themes. The results of the study indicate that it is possible
for someone to practice critical literacy because she has had the habit of reading since
childhood, she always tries to understand the meaning of the text, then identifies the
implied words in and looks for the relationship between the text and other texts.
Furthermore, this study provides an explanation of how a college student practices
critical literacy for academic and non-academic purposes because this study explores
the critical literacy practice of a college student in Indonesian which she has been doing
so far.
