Indonesian Pre-service Teachers’ Perceptions on Authentic Materials For Teaching English
Abstract
The use of authentic materials in English language learning has shown a positive trend in
its frequency of use. However, in its implementation, there are still many debates about its
effectiveness and also how often to use it in English learning. This study aims to identify
teachers’ perceptions of authentic materials 63 respondents who participated in this study. To
collect the data, the author used Fai's (2011) questionnaire instrument using a 4-likert scale
which was adapted to Indonesian language to make it easier for the respondents to understand.
There are about 21 questions which are divided into 5 sections namely The Role of Authentic
Materials, The Difference Between Local Textbook and Authentic Materials, The Effect of
Authentic Materials, Selection of Authentic Materials, Selection text of Authentic Materials, The
Feeling when using Authentic Materials. The overall survey results show positive results in the
use of authentic materials by the majority of respondents and get some feedback on the strengths
and weaknesses of the use. Based on the result, the highest score is about ‘The Feeling When
Using Authentic Materials’ with (M=3.22). Meanwhile the lowest score is ‘The Difference
Between Local Textbook and Authentic Materials’ with (M=2.94)
