Islamic Center Di Pulau Dompak Provinsi Kepulauan Riau Dengan Pendekatan Arsitektur Melayu Dalam Transformasi Desain
Abstract
Dompak island is a new governmental center in Riau Islands. The location is an area specified for religious activities in Dompak. There exists a mosque with insufficient facilities for it to become the center for islamic activities in the province.
The architecture of Islamic Center is informal, but Malayan Architecture is formal. The problem is in what manner can we present informal Islamic Center using Malayan Architecture approach. Formal stands for conceptual and logical principles (formal as in symmetrical), informal stands for the values that do not follow certain principles thus it is more free (informal as asymmetrical).
The design processing begins by learning what facilities are there at the moment, the standard of provincial and capital Islamic Center architecture, and previous studies on the application in Jakarta Islamic Center and Samarinda Islamic Center. The architectural designing approach uses the concept of local architecture as the source, in this case, Malayan traditional architecture. It uses Tanjak (A traditional headgear from Malay) as the shape. Also, to create strong islamic theme of architecture, it uses Transformation (Laseau, 1980) as an ornament: glide, rotation, reflection, inversion, and fold.
The result of the design is the Islamic Center with dynamic informal looks (asymmetrical) with the formal visual of Tanjak. It creates a new shape that gives an impression of a monumental form of architecture.
