A Survey on Translation As A Learning Strategy by Efl Higher Education Students in English Learning
Abstract
This study explores translation as a learning strategy in English learning of
EFL higher education students in a private university. A survey study was
employed by adapting the Inventory for Translation as a Learning Strategy (ITLS)
questionnaire from Liao (2002). The questionnaire consist of 27 items. In
conducting this study, SPSS and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze the data to
obtain descriptive statistics calculation. The participants were 97 students enrolling
in English Education majors batch 2018 at a Private University. They were selected
randomly. Based on the findings, the participant’s response to the ITLS items
revealed the most frequent strategy use of translation is the use of machine
translation and English-Indonesia and Indonesia-English dictionaries (M=4.15 and
SD= 0.91). Meanwhile, the least frequent strategy use of translation is to ask each
other questions and work together to discover the meaning of idioms and phrases
(M=2.63 and SD=1.14).
