A Survey of EFL Vocational Students' Speaking Anxiety in Online Classes
Abstract
This research is concerned with the anxiety of speaking English in online classes in
Vocational High Schools. This study aims to determine the level of anxiety
experienced by vocational high school students and to find the factors that influence
students' speaking anxiety. This research uses survey research. The participants
were 32 high school students in Yogyakarta. Data collection was carried out using
the FLSA questionnaire which was modified by Oztürk & Gürbüz (2014). Data
were analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The results of this study found that
students have a high level of speaking anxiety, accompanied by four factors that
tend to influence students' speaking anxiety levels in online classes, namely (1)
When students feel nervous when speaking English with native speakers (item
number 7 with a mean of 3.5 and standard deviation 0.7), (2) When students feel
insecure when they speak English in class (item number 9 with mean 3.5 and
standard deviation 0.7), (3) When students always feel that other students speak
English better than they do (item number 12 with mean 2.5 and standard deviation
0.7), and (4) When students feel self-conscious about speaking English in front of
other students (item number 13 with mean 2 and standard deviation 0).
