Each student has his/her own strategy in learning English. Language learning strategies ease the students to learn more effectively. This study aims to identify the language learning strategies used most by freshmen in a public secondary school in Yogyakarta. The populations of the research were 147 secondary school students. This survey research adopts Oxford’s (1990) Strategy Inventory of Language Learning Strategies (SILL) version 7.0 as the instrument. The validity of the instruments is 0.92. SILL questionnaire contained 50 items which divided into 6 categories; Memory Strategies, Cognitive Strategies, Compensation Strategies, Metacognitive Strategies, Affective Strategies, and Social Strategies. The result of this study shows that metacognitive strategy has the highest value compared to the other strategies. Meanwhile, the lowest strategy is affective.en_US
