    Abstract
    This research is aimed to describe what functions of backchannel that are appeared in this conversation in pre-service coaching and to explain functions of each backchannel. The object of this research is two pre-service teacher of public and private high school in Yogyakarta. This research uses an observational study. The researcher collects the data by observation, interview, and document. The researcher found three functions of backchannel; continuer (CON), convergence tokens (CNV) and engaged response (ER). The most used backchannel form is dominated by continuer. Based on finding, the participants are able to used backchannel as its functions since the conversation is successful.
