How Depending on AI Can Impact the Analytical Skills and Critical Thinking of Young People

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is now a common tool for students, but overuse of it can dull their brainpower and problem-solving skills. The paper argues that AI is not the sole cause of this problem. Students are often under tight deadlines and are judged on their final answers, so AI doing their work quickly becomes an easy option. The essay leverages research and a personal experience in an Operations Research course to explain how students may reach correct answers without understanding how they were produced. Banning AI won't solve this problem. A better approach is for students to think first, and use AI second. They should try to solve the task, explain what they are thinking, and then ask AI to help them. AI is able to then give hints, point mistakes, and ask useful questions. In this way, students can benefit from AI while still developing their critical-thinking skills.Banning AI is not going to solve this problem.
