| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study is to find out the differentiation of social maturity in children with down syndrome based on their gender and whether they are institutionalized (they who live in dormitory) and non-institutionalized children (they who live with their parent). The hypothesis tested was based on the assumption that non institutionalized children with down syndrome has higher social maturity than institutionalized children, and the male children with down syndrome has higher social maturity than the female children with down syndrome. Subjects in this research are 20 children with down syndrome in age 11-18 years old. They are 5 male and 5 female children with down syndrome which are institutionalized, and also 5 male and 5 female children with down syndrome which are non intitutionalized. All the subjects were in schools for special need children in Yogyakarta. Data were collected by using the Vineland Social Maturity (VSMS) from Doll (1965). The analysis data were processed by Mann-Whitney U test, using the SPSS 15 computer program. The result of this study shows that there were no different of social maturity in children with down syndrome between institutionalized and non-institutionalized children, and also between male and female subjects who institutionalized. The result indicated that there were different of social maturity between all male and female subjects with z value - 1,967, p=0,049 (p<0,05), and also between male and female who were non- institutionalized with z value -2,2, p=0,028 (p<0,05). The female subjects has higher score of social maturity significantly than the male subjects. | en_US |
