Architecture and Reconciliation: A Design of Co-Habitant Space for Palestinians and Israelis

Abstract

The prolonged Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caused deep physical, social, and psychological fragmentation, especially in areas like the Gaza Strip. Urban spaces have become zones of division, where restricted mobility, segregated infrastructure, and destroyed housing have further marginalized communities. The challenge lies not only in rebuilding what has been lost but also in reimagining how space can serve as a medium for reconciliation, coexistence, and resilience. This project responds to that challenge by proposing a design intervention that shifts the focus from separation to integration through architecture. Using the concept of a *Co-Habitant Space*, this project introduces a layered, inclusive design typology that supports social interaction, cultural exchange, and environmental sustainability. The design avoids rigid zoning and instead adopts a multilayered spatial approach that allows for flexible, shared use of space by different communities. Rooted in both historical urban narratives and contemporary needs, the project integrates climate-responsive architecture, and community participation to create a prototype of reconciliation architecture in Gaza. Ultimately, the project offers an alternative vision of post-conflict urbanism that values coexistence, sustainability, and dignity for all.
