A Design of Javan Lutung (Trachypithecus auratus) Rescue Center in Magelang with Behavioral Approach
Abstract
This design proposal presents a Javan lutung (Trachypithecus auratus)
rescue centre in Magelang, Indonesia, developed through a behavioural
approach that emphasizes the species
'
natural activity patterns,
environmental mimicry, and seamless integration with human functions.
The design responds to key aspects of lutung behaviour—such as
arboreal movement, social interaction, and territorial instincts—by
creating spatial configurations that support natural behaviours in
captivity. Layered canopy structures, organic enclosures, and
transitional zones are employed to mimic the forest environment while
enabling effective human-lutung interaction for care and observation.
User circulation is strategically planned to reduce animal stress and
promote educational engagement for visitors and students. The centre
also incorporates a school-based rehabilitation programme to raise
community awareness and encourage active conservation efforts,
ultimately aiming to release healthy lutungs back into the wild. As such,
the sanctuary functions not only as a rescue facility but also as a
dynamic platform for sustaining lutung populations through education,
research, and community involvement.
