    Abstract
High activities that occurring on a road segment are common, especially on urban roads. These activities were called side friction because it often decrease the performance of the road traffic. Side friction consists of vehicles entering and exiting the roadway, stopped and parked vehicles on the side of the road, slow-moving vehicles, and pedestrians around the road segment. The segment of Kaliurang Street Km 6.3 – 6.9 is known to have a high level of side friction, especially during its peak hours. Therefore, it is important to determine whether the side friction affects the performance of the road segment and to provide alternative solutions for future improvements. The research was conducted on Sunday and Monday with the data collected included the geometric characteristics of the road segment, traffic volume and the frequency of side friction occurrences. The data were then analyzed using the Indonesian Road Capacity Guideline (PKJI 2023) to acquire the class of side friction, road performance data, and also the influence of side friction towards road performance. The results shows that the existing degree of saturation (DS) is at 0,98 and the travel speed (VMP) is at 21,30 km/hour. Alternative solutions were provided in 3 ways. First with widening the road. Second with the reduction of side friction of exit and entry vehicle and widened road, and third with reduction of side friction of exit and entry vehicle following the removal of parking and widened road. The third solution was the best solution with DS is at 0,74 and travel speed of 33,28 km/hour. The result of paired t-test was shown that side friction had a huge influence towards DS and VMP.
