dc.description.abstractNon-engineered buildings in Indonesia, especially residences for low to middle income communities, have a high vulnerability to earthquakes due to the lack of technical standards in planning and construction. This research analyzes non-engineered building construction practices through questionnaire surveys in two residential areas, with a focus on the physical characteristics of buildings, typology of the informal construction sector, as well as relationship patterns between building owners and construction actors. The research results show that social interactions between home owners and informal workers have a significant effect on construction quality. These findings emphasize the need for a contextual approach in earthquake mitigation that integrates technical and socio-economic aspects. This study recommends policy interventions, community-based technical training, and the development of simple construction guidelines to improve the seismic resistance of buildings in disaster-prone areas.en_US
