    Abstract
Styrofoam waste is a type of inorganic waste that takes a very long time to decompose, thus emphasizing the need for utilization efforts. This research aims to determine the effect of substituting styrofoam on the volume of sand and to find the optimum substitution of styrofoam in the concrete block mixture. The composition of the concrete block mixture is 1 cement: 7 sand, with variations of styrofoam replacement at 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% of the sand volume. Standard testing according to SNI 03-0349-1989 is used to measure compressive strength and water absorption, in addition to volume weight and heat insulation tests for the concrete blocks. The results of this research show that the use of styrofoam in concrete block production can produce lighter blocks, with efficiency in heat insulation, and greater resistance to water. Although the compressive strength of the blocks decreases, the environmental benefits derived from recycling styrofoam waste can be a crucial consideration in the development of sustainable construction materials. In this study, an optimum substitution of 15% styrofoam for the sand volume was also determined.
