    Abstract
Traffic accidents are one of the biggest causes of death in Indonesia. Accidents occur due to several factors, namely human factors, vehicles, infrastructure, and the environment. From several factors, the most crucial factor is infrastructure. The road that was built uses the principles of road safety which involves the civil engineering academic community directly in the entire design process. But unfortunately, this is not introduced to the public so that it often raises questions and differences in perceptions. These conditions must be identified to determine the next steps. In this study identification was carried out to identify the important role of the civil engineering academic community in the community which was represented by 167 students of SMA Negeri 1 Pakem. This study uses primary data obtained from the interview process and filling out a questionnaire containing 5 questions related to the role of the academic community i reducing accident rates. The results of the study concluded that there were still many parties who did not know about the role of the civil engineering academic community. During the preactivity, only 15% of students thought that the civil engineering academic community played a role in reducing the number of accidents. However, after the material presentation activities, the statement changed significantly, namely to 61%. This proves that the introduction of the academic community really needs to be done as early as possible to establish communication with the community and increase the role of the academic community in efforts to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
