    Abstract
Location of Indonesia’s new capital city makes Balikpapan City a buffer zone for the capital city. In preparation to become a buffer zone for the capital city is a good drainage system. Problem that often occurs in Balikpapan City is flooding in Ampal Watershed, which is one of eight watersheds in Balikpapan City. Flooding in the Ampal Watershed is influenced by the diversion of land functions, sediment, garbage, and weeds as the cause of narrowing the drainage canal. This research method uses rainfall data from 2005 – 2019 with Log Pearson III for 2, 5, and 10 year return period to get the value of rain intensity using the Mononobe formula. This research is divided into 9 research location points where these points are the confluence of sub-watershed flows. Evaluation was carried out through a comparison of canal discharge using the Manning equation formula and flood discharge using the Rational method. Results of the research location were flooded except T1. The efforts that can be made for this drainage canal are to emphasize more on waste management in Balikpapan City accordance with the Regional Regulation of Balikpapan City No. 13 of 2013, normalization efforts that caused upstream, T1, T5, T6, T7 and downstream didn’t flood, efforts to change dimensions in this research found that T3 and T4 couldn’t be change due to land conditions, and the important role of Balikpapan City Gonvernment in carrying out flood management in Balikpapan City accordance with Government Regulation of The Republic Indonesia No. 21 of 2008.
