    Abstract
Concrete block is one of the most popular wall materials used in Indonesia. Concrete block is preferred because it is easy to find/make and relatively inexpensive. However, concrete block has a large density, which is around 2000 kg/m3 – 2200 kg/m3. In fact, from the perspective of earthquake-resistant buildings, the use of lightweight materials is highly recommended to reduce earthquake loads. This study attempted to get the proportion of a mixture of concrete block that is classified as light concrete block, which is below or equals 1400 kg/m3 but still meets the requirements written in SNI 03-0348-1989. To reduce the density of the concrete block, in this study, sawdust was added as an additional material. Wood sawdust is a waste of wood cutting which has a light weight and abundantly not utilized. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to obtain the compressive strength, density, and water absorption of the concrete block. Based on the results of laboratory tests, the optimum proportion was obtained in the sample Variation 6B, which is 24.78 kg/cm2, the density is 1556 kg/m3, and the water absorption is 12.5%. In this variation, the value of compressive strength and water absorption has complied with SNI 03 0348-1989 but the volume weight still exceeds 1400 kg/m3.
