Gondomanan and KM Nol are two successive 4-legged signalized intersections located in the center of Yogyakarta City. A busy area connected by the two hosts many historical buildings, public offices, commercial blocks and is famous as a tourist’s destination and public space. At many times, large number of vehicles pass through the intersections, causing congestion. The distance between the two intersections is relatively short so that signal coordination is possible to be designed to reduce congestion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of the existing intersections and to reduce congestion by implementing signal coordination scenario between the two intersections. Microsimulation analysis and development of the scenario were performed using VISSIM software. The parameters used to select the best alternative design were intersection capacity, as well as travel delay and speed at the road section connecting the two intersections. The data used for the study include traffic volume during peak and off-peak hours, the geometry of the intersections and the road section, as well as vehicle speed and driver’s behavior. The results showed, among others, that at current state, the Gondomanan and KM Nol intersections were not coordinated. A signal coordination scenario using a common cycle time of 150 seconds was shown to reduce delay and increase the travel speed better that that which used 135 seconds. During peak hour, the travel delay of West-bound traffic between the two intersections decreased by 42.40% from the existing 20.73 seconds to 11.94 seconds. The capacity increased 27.53% from the existing 677.3 to 863.13 PCUs/hour. The speed increased only marginally by 5.38% from the existing 23.0 to 24.3 km/hour.en_US
