The Design of Eco-Vision Research and Educational Tourism Center in Piyungan Landfill 2.0 Revitalization Project using Regenerative Architecture Principle
Abstract
The project addresses Indonesia's pressing waste management challenges epitomized by
the overburdened Piyungan Landfill in Yogyakarta, which consistently exceeds its daily waste intake
capacity. Concurrently, Yogyakarta grapples with a scarcity of green spaces, violating Indonesian law
mandating 30% green coverage, thus compromising biodiversity and residents' well-being. This
project envisions a transformative approach by revitalizing Piyungan Landfill into an Eco-Vision
Research and Educational Tourism Center, integrating waste management education, research, and
eco-tourism through regenerative architecture. The project introduces advanced waste processing
technologies alongside interactive learning environments, where visitors can experience waste-toenergy processes, material recovery, and ecological restoration firsthand. Through immersive
exhibitions, guided tours, and hands-on workshops, the center fosters public awareness and active
participation in sustainable waste practices while demonstrating the potential for circular economy
solutions. Additionally, the design prioritizes habitat restoration and green space expansion, ensuring
that education is embedded within a thriving natural environment. By merging waste management,
education, and tourism, the project aims to create an engaging platform for students, researchers,
policymakers, and the general public, fostering cross-sector collaboration and promoting long-term
environmental resilience in Yogyakarta.
