A research on making heterogeneous catalyst from waste of golden snail shells (Pila ampullacea), for biodiesel conversion of rice bran oil has been investigated. This research aim to determine the effectiveness of using shell ash (Pila ampullacea) which contains CaO (calcium oxide) and to find an effective and efficient method in biodiesel conversion. The catalyst was prepared by crushing the snail shell, followed by calcination at 900oC for 2 hours. The obtained solids were analyzed using FTIR, SEM-EDX, XRD instruments and alkalinity test. The catalytic activity of the snail shell catalyst was tested in transesterification reaction of rice bran oil with oil volume ratio: methanol = 20: 80 by reflux in successively for 1 hour, 3 hours and 5 hours and microwave method for 30 minutes. The result of characterization with FTIR showed the presence of O-C-O group of monodentic carbonate at wave number 1463.05 cm-1 and the presence of CaO (Ca-O) at wave number 407.02 cm-1. EDX analysis results showed the presence of Ca 60.01% and O 24.36%. In addition, the results of X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) showed the formation of CaO crystals in the presence of typical peaks of CaO in peak 2θ = 32.48ᵒ, 37.22ᵒ, 50.64ᵒ, 54.14ᵒ, and 64.02ᵒ. From the results of catalyst activity test, with variation of reflux time of 1 hour, 3 hours, and 5 hours, successively produced mL yield of biodiesel as much as 12.92 mL, 10.99 mL, and 13.98 mL. As well as the method of microwave within 30 minutes of reaction time, produced mL yield of biodiesel as much as 17.41 mL.en_US
