Cerebral Palsy (CP) results someone’s activity limitation due to damaged or development impaired of the brain structural in early life. CP is caused by various factors that occur during prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal periods. Low APGAR score, Low Birth Weight (LBW), and preterm birth are factors that occur during perinatal and postnatal periods.
Objective
This study objective was to determine the association between low APGAR score, LBW, and prematurity with the incidence of CP in children.
Methods
This study used an analitic observational study with case control design. The subjects were patients in Paediatric Unit and Medical Rehabilitation Unit of Dr. Sardjito Center Hospital in Yogyakarta from the year 2012-2016. The data was obtained from medical record and analyzed using Chi-square.
Result
There're 16 case subjects and 16 control subjects. The result of bivariate analysis showed that there was a association between low APGAR score and the incidence of CP in children (p value < 0,001). The result of multivariate analysis showed that the largest strength of the relationship with dependent variables was factor of asphyxia neonatorum history (OR = 15,4; 95% IK: 2,495-95,053).
Conclusion
There was a statistically significant relationship between low APGAR scores and the incidence of CP in children. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between LBW and preterm birth with the incidence of CP in children. Evidently, asphyxia neonatorum history showed the greatest association strength with the incidence of CP in children. | en_US |
