    The Pharmacists Role in Sterile Dispensing at Public Hospitals in Yogyakarta: a Qualitative Study Design

    Abstract
    Background: Pharmacists have a very important role in sterile dispensing. Pharmacists roles in sterile dispensing will achieve safety and effectiveness in therapy. Objective: To find out the role carried out by pharmacists in sterile preparations at public hospitals in Yogyakarta and find out the problem opportunity and challenges of pharmacists when sterile dispensing. Methods: Qualitative analysis research using case study design with a cross sectional approach at 4 public hospitals in Yogyakarta. Collecting data with semi- structured questions as a guidance for in-depth interviews. This research was conducted in June until July 2024 using participant pharmacists who work in sterile dispensing and work at public hospitals in Yogyakarta and the total of participants are 5 pharmacists. The interviews were recorded, the recorded transcribed verbatim and analysed using coding framework. Results: In type A hospitals, everyone does according to their department, but in type B hospitals pharmacists work concurrently in several departments. Role of pharmacist at sterile dispensing are screening and verification the prescriptions, drug preparation and reconstitution, quality control, administering medication, monitoring side effects. Problems of pharmacists who works at sterile dispensing are limited facilities and human resources, lack of supply medicine. Opportunity of pharmacists are medical check-up regularly, training dispensing sterile, collaboration with other health workers, and hospital facilities support. Challenge for pharmacists are work with high risk, work multiple departments, improve knowledge. Conclusions: Pharmacists have a not yet optimized role in sterile dispensing, pharmacists always use opportunities to overcome perceived obstacles to carrying out patients therapy.
