The Design of New Kampung Baru: Melting Point Between Seashore and in-land Village as a Celebration of Diversity in Balikpapan Abstraction of Nusantara Architecture”
Abstract
Since 1800s, Balikpapan has been popular destination for people from other islands
to trading things until they ended up become permanent dwellers in the city; starts
from Banjar, Bugis, Jawa tribes, and Tionghoa ethnic comes to Balikpapan. It causes
Balikpapan to be not only rich in its nature, but also in terms of people and culture
where each tribe still maintains their traditions.
Kampung Baru is a floating village located in the western part of Balikpapan and is
famous as a mobility center to get to the capital of the archipelago because of the
many speed boat ports and kelotok boats there. With its crowded condition due to
raising populations, the settlements in Kampung Baru, which is already inadequate
from the very first starts to become more dense. With developments that are very
close to each other and many people using this place, the Kampung Baru area is an
area that is prone to collapse due to unstable building structures and is also prone to
fire due to the narrow distance between buildings. Apart from that, access and
circulation for the people is also disorganized because the roads tend to be narrow
and a bit dangerous due to some of the wood that is brittle and railings that have
fallen off. Therefore, it is necessary to review Kampung Baru Settlement and its
revitalization so that it becomes an adequate place fo dwelling as well as improving
the quality of life of the people by providing unique characters of the diversity of
culture comes from newcomers in Balikpapan City using an abstraction of Nusantara
architecture.
