A Design of Recovery Center in Surakarta for Cardiovascular Outpatients with Javanese Wellness Architecture Approach
Abstract
The idea departs from the growing number of heart disease patients in Indonesia,
leading to a collaboration between the Indonesian government and the UAE to build a
heart hospital in Surakarta. However, the recovery process is equally important as the
medical treatment itself. Therefore, this project aims to create a space where
outpatients can heal themselves by implementing Javanese wellness principles,
extracted from values such as Serat Munasiyat Jati and Pesanggrahan Langenharjo.
Diana Agrest's theory is used to transform these non-design values into architectural
concepts. As a result, the design seeks not only to reflect these norms architecturally
but also to break away from the conventional rectangular forms typical of hospitals or
other common health facilities, instead embracing the natural flow.
