    Abstract
This research aims to explain the classroom management strategies used in EFL writing and speaking classes at a private university in Yogyakarta. This is a qualitative observationalstudy. The primary data were obtained from two different writing and speaking classes. One English lecturer in speaking class and one English lecturer in writing class were observed in this study. They were chosen because they taught speaking and writing class. Apart from that, they also used certain classroom management strategies in teaching speaking and writing class. Lecturer 1 or the writing lecturer used several classroom management strategies in teaching such as: seating arrangements, encouraging participation, engaging students in learning, correcting mistakes, and providing interesting topics. Some additional strategies used by Lecturer 1 such as; giving examples, giving prompts, calling students by their names, praising, giving clear & detailed instructions, and giving feedback. Meanwhile, Lecturer 2 or the speaking teacher used several classroom management strategies such as: encouraging participation, correcting mistakes, and providing interesting topics. Several emergent findings were also found. Some strategies were also used by Lecturer 2 such as: calling students by their names, praising, and giving feedback. The results of this study suggest that English lecturers in writing class might use encouraging participation strategy and English lecturers in speaking class might use correcting mistakes strategy that are most appropriate for their students.
