dc.description.abstractThe preliminary design of acetaldehyde for capacity of 13.000 ton/year using ethanol as a raw material to produce acetaldehyde with percentage of purity 99,5%. The required process in this plant design is dehydrogenation of ethanol with copper catalyst to produce acetaldehyde in fixed bed multi-tube reactor at 260°C and atmospheric pressure. This plant is included in high risk plant because this process requires a high operation condition (temperature). This plant isfurther about to builtin Solo, Central Java. It covers 280000 m2 of land and needs 144 employees. It works continually for 24 hours/day and 330 days/year. Process unit requires 2616,2006kg/hour of ethanol, whereas utility unit needs 15.381,3649 kg/hour water for cooling process, 14.901,40 kg/hour water for domestic, 101.195,1709 kg/hour of steam, 25,9235 kW of electricity, and 523,8186 kg/hour of fuel oil. The economic evaluation shows Fixed Capital of $30.781.948. Working Capital of $46.882.948. Percentage of Return on Investment are 28,93% before tax, and 25,17% after tax. Whereas Break Even Point (BEP) of 53,17% (permitted BEP number in Indonesia is 40% - 60 %), Shut Down Point (SDP) of 28,88%, and Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFR) of 27%. Meanwhile, Pay Out Time Before Taxes (POTb) of 1,46 years (this resultshows a number for high risk plant, which is POTb number less than 2 years) and Pay Out Time After Taxes (POTa) of 1.64 years. Based on this economic evaluation, it can be concluded that the result was satisfied so the plant are interesting and appropriate to build.en_US
