An Analysis of the Factors Behind the Growth of Sexual Violence Against Women in Turkey (2006-2021)
Abstract
Sexual violence against women has become an increasingly disturbing
issue in Turkey. The prevalence of sexual violence has increased under the
leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, raising worries about the government's
response and the socioeconomic causes, leading to this research. This thesis
discussion here also dives into Turkish society's patriarchal values, which
perpetuate gender inequity and produce an environment in which violence against
women is tolerated. The government's role in investigating this issue is obvious,
with Erdogan opposing gender equality and withdrawing Turkey from the Istanbul
Convention, which has the intention of reduction violence against women. The
failure of the government to respond comprehensively and effectively adds to the
persistence of sexual assault. This thesis finishes by emphasizing the critical
importance of coordinated efforts by all stakeholders to address sexual violence
against women in Turkey. Prioritizing women's rights, agreeing to international
accords, enacting strict legislation to protect victims and hold criminals
accountable, and encouraging comprehensive education and awareness campaigns
are among the recommendations. Turkey can begin to address the systemic
conditions that contribute to sexual violence and create a safer society for all by
confronting patriarchal conventions and increasing gender equality.
