    Abstract
As mechanical cooling is inevitable in modern tropical living and has a large impact on energy con- servation, this work aims to investigate the significance of passive design strategies to improve the current practice of urban housing in Jakarta. The hybrid between contemporary and vernacular approaches has been proposed as a solution of addressing the complexity of urban living in Jakar- ta. It presents the fact of the climate context and traditional approaches and an analysis of a hy- bridize house case study. Additionally, the importance of passive approaches and efficient me- chanical cooling systems in urban neighborhood of Jakarta are presented. It reviews the implica- tion on the provisions of comfort and energy conservation of air-conditioning that are summarized as design strategies, which are recommended to be tested as the prototype model using IES VE software. The results are then compared across the typical house, hybrid house and the prototype. Based on the simulation, there are three parameters which are significant to improve the comfort provisions and increase air-conditioning efficiency. These parameters should be considered on housing strategies to accommodate a hybrid lifestyle of living in Jakarta towards sustainable devel- opment. In addition to these three parameters, other ambiguous parameters that might have the potentials to initiate further research are explored in order to increase the comfort range percent- age.
