dc.description.abstractPublic space becomes an important part in people's lives nowadays.Space convenience factor provides an enormous influence to the activities that take place in it. Comfortable space is not only a terms of physical perceived by human senses, but also judging from the psychological aspect is closely attached to the conditions and character of a person. This kind of comfortness is influenced by gender roles that impact and influence on it’s matches with space where users are located. Gender roles are not only owned by the user but also owned by the space occupied by the users. To be able to know the comfort of space which is influenced by aspects of gender roles (masculine, feminine and androgynous), it is necessary to indicate the character of the room that is considered comfortable. This study was conducted to determine the suitability of user’s gender roles and space gender role where the space occupied, later on the relation between those gender role would be revealed. This study was conducted using descriptive studies and field observations in order to collect the data. The location used for sampling is the atrium at a shopping center in Yogyakarta. Atrium became an option for a public space that is widely used to relax and hang out with a feeling of comfort. Based on the data and the analysis conducted, the results showed that people will find comfort point when the cross - gender role situation is occured. That is when the gender roles of different users with gender roles occupied space, for example, masculine users will be comfortable in a feminine/ androgynous space. It also obtained the indicators that determine gender role’s characteristics of a public space. Masculine public space will have different indicators with feminine public space. While androgynous public space character combines a balance between masculine and feminine space.en_US
