dc.description.abstractThe community-based management concept of communal domestic wastewater treatment facilities development is considered just to emphasize physical construction only without taking a note the readiness of human resources at the local level, consequently, the development of that facilities often failed and unsustainable. This research aimed to know the public participation of the sustainable community-based of communal domestic wastewater management systems examine the public participation level in the sustainable communal WWTP management at Sengkan and formulate some strategies required to increase the public participation for the sustainability system. The research conducted in Sengkan, Condongcatur, Sleman district with amount of repondents 30 people as representative of those facilitiy consumers. Results of the research showed that public participation level in the sustainable communal WWTP management at Sengkan was categorized as consultation level. This condition showed that people are not only given the information by the local government, but they also being encouraged to share their opinions, although there is no warranty that their opinions will be considered in decision making. In Sengkan district, they have had management organization in local level, organized as self-supporting organization or Kelompok Swadaya Masyarakat (KSM) named as KSM ”Sengkan Sehat”. However, in the implementation is not optimimal yet. They also have had financial mechanism related to operational and maintenance cost. Moreover community involvement in Sengkan districts lead by contribution in kind and in cash. Whereas, community involvement in the operational phase showed by the willingness to pay the retribution 5000 per month per house. Strategies required to be recommended in order to increase the public participation level in the sustainable communal WWTP management at Sengkan are by strengthening the development aspects of community empowerment, gender and poverty (pemberdayaan masyarakat, jender dan kemiskinan (PMJK) and strengthening of the institutional aspects KSM Sengkan Sehat in order to run optimally.en_US
