Berdasarkan Masterplan Museum Sonobudoyo Tahun 2014 telah diamanatkan untuk melakukan pembangunan gedung baru dan lingkungannya yang terletak di bagian belakang komplek Museum Sonobudoyo Unit 1, Jl. Trikora No. 6 Yogyakarta. Pembangunan gedung baru Museum Sonobudoyo dan lingkunganya sangat diperlukan mengingat koleksi yang dipamerkan di Pameran Tetap hanya 397 dari 62.661 atau 0,6 % dari keseluruhan koleksi. (KAK Penyusunan DED Gedung Pameran Tetap Museum Sonobudoyo). Mengingat urgensi dari kebutuhan akan penambahan fasilitas guna meningkatkan sarana dan prasarana museum, maka diperlukan sebuah metode khusus dalam proses perancangan Gedung Pameran Tetap Museum Sonobudoyo ini. Arsitektur Konservasi dengan pendekatan Infill Design dipilih untuk menjadi solusi desain mengingat Komplek Museum Sonobudoyo sendiri merupakan kawasan Cagar Budaya (SK Menteri NoPM.89/PW.007/MKP/2011) yang perlu penanganan khusus.
