Efl Students’ Perceptions On The Teaching Skill Of Native And Non-Native English Speaking Teachers
Abstract
The studies that researched strengths and weaknesses of learning English with
native and non-native English teachers in EFL context were rarely discussed in
Indonesia context. Thus, to fill this void, this research aims to investigate the
learners’ perception in experiencing their native and non-native English speaking
teachers’ teaching skills. The data were collected through a tight protocol of
COVID-19 face to face interview and Zoom interview to the participants who
experienced learning English with native and non-native English teachers in
English courses. The data was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The research
found that learners perceived both native and non-native English teachers
competent in teaching English and have similar quality of English proficiency. The
preference of Native English Speaking Teacher (NEST) or Non-Native English
Speaking Teacher (NNEST) tends to depend on learners’ learning objectives
instead of their teaching competence where both teachers have qualification and
experience in teaching English. Thus, this study implied that NNEST currently have
the same opportunities to teach English by also developing their English proficiency
as well as their quality to teach English.
